Adventures with Sam: On the Farm!

Our Easter weekend started out with a special treat: Pumpkin’s first trip to the theatre.

(I’m saying that with a posh accent, by the way: thea-tah.)

Adventures with Sam: On the farm

Cowgirl boots on and ready for an adventure on the farm!

We were invited to go see Adventures with Sam at Greenwich Theatre – and it was absolutely fabulous.

I have to admit, I was a bit nervous about going. My 14-month-old toddler is fairly wiggly at the best of times. Even Frozen only keeps her quiet for about half an hour these days and, while she always seems to want to sit on my lap, as soon as I have her there, she has other things to do and wants down. Immediately.

She’s a busy girl.

But, I didn’t need to worry. Adventures with Sam is an interactive play aimed at kids aged 3-7. The kids in that age group that were there were obviously having a great time – and so was my younger one. The bright lights, catchy songs, sound effects and great action on stage really managed to keep her attention and I only had to ply her with food a couple of times.

The play tells the story of Sam, a young boy who loves to read books and have imaginative adventures. This time, he goes to a farm, where he meets Heidi the hen.

Heidi has a problem though. She has lost the golden egg that she recently laid – so Sam agrees to help her find it.

Sam’s adventure takes him to a variety of places – through rain and wind – and he also meets various characters on the way. Like a sheepdog who teaches him a dance.

Throughout all of this, Sam asks the audience for advice, wanders around the audience and even invites a few children on stage to help him with a particular task. Of course, everyone gets up to dance during the dog’s lesson.

The play was 45 minutes long and, although Greenwich Theatre is pretty big, only the first few rows were used for the show, meaning everyone was close to the action. In addition, only the middle section of seats were used, so everyone had a good view of the stage.

We actually chose to sit in some of the empty seats to the side, as it meant I’d be able to jump up and haul the baby out if she started screaming, and it also gave us a bit of room to spread out – and she got her own seat, rather than having to sit on my lap.

The view was still great and I got a little teary-eyed as she sat like such a big girl in her own seat, watching the show and chewing on a gingerbread man. She’s growing up so fast!

Oh, and after the show, we also got to meet the cast and Pumpkin got her picture taken with Sam – although she was obviously much more interested in the golden egg!
