Review: belVita Crunch Breakfast Biscuits

I was recently sent a selection of belVita Crunch Breakfast Biscuits to review. Back when I was working in an office, I regularly scarfed a pack of the original belVita biscuits as I ran out the door to catch my train. I always thought they were pretty tasty, but I was glad to see the brand has expanded the range – a bit of variety in the mornings is certainly a good thing.

The new flavours are apricot, hazelnut and chocolate chip.

All three taste great. They have just the right amount of sweetness and a satisfying crunch that you don’t get from most cereal bars.

The apricot ones were by far my favourites. Fruit pieces are visible throughout and each bite gives a tangy little punch to your taste buds.

Meanwhile, the chocolate chip and hazelnut flavours were also yummy – both with plenty of fillings as well as the lovely oaty flavour and texture.

The chocolate chip was best for dunking though: the warm chocolate combined with the whole grains and the sweet, sweet taste of milky coffee definitely helped me make it through the morning routine.

Oh, and what was Pumpkin’s thought on these? Well, she loves them all. In fact, every time I had one, she’d pull it out of my hand and start gnawing on it herself. The little food hijacker…

biscuits

As I mentioned above, these bars work well as an on-the-go breakfast option. Or, at least, as something to throw in my handbag as we’re running out the door.

According to the box, the biscuits are meant to release their energy over four hours – and it’s recommended you enjoy them with a bit of fruit (for vitamins), a dairy product (for calcium) and a cup of coffee or tea (for hydration). However, on the mornings that these were my breakfast, I rarely had them with anything other than a cuppa, and usually started to get peckish around eleven o’clock.

I never saw this as a problem – even though I was counting calories. Since each pack of three has fewer than 200 kcal, I could easily afford a mid-morning snack once I got settled, and I wouldn’t have to worry about going over my caloric allowance.

However, I really think these bars are best as an afternoon snack. That 3:00 slump when I start craving something sweet is the perfect time to break out a pack of three biscuits, pour a hot drink and indulge. Plus the individual wrapping means I won’t mindlessly eat my way through a whole box as I try to get the baby down for a nap or work on my next blog post.

I was sent three packs of belVita biscuits for review purposes, as well as a pre-loaded Costa gift card in return for an honest review of the products.

In addition, I entered a previous post in the #MorningWin Linky Challenge sponsored by belVita Breakfast. Learn more at http://bit.ly/belVitaUK.
