Review: Camilia homeopathic teething treatment

As I’ve mentioned in two previous posts (one about symptoms of teething, the other about teething pain relief), I was invited to an event last Wednesday for National Teething Week. It was sponsored by Camilia, a homeopathic teething treatment and I had a fab day. Before I get into the actual product review, I just want to cover the event itself a bit more.

I was one of four bloggers there (the others were from Tiny Footsteps, All About a Mummy and Munchies and Munchkins). The event was held at the gorgeous Pelham Hotel in South Kensington and we were treated very well.

Pumpkin quickly made friends with the ladies from Boiron (the company that makes Camilia).

The day started with coffee and socialising. Then, we listened to Dr Philip Wander tell us all about teething, dealing with pain and homeopathy. Next, was a bit of information about Camilia itself, before we were off for a mini baby massage class.

Finally, there was the amazing afternoon tea spread – complete with crustless sandwiches and gorgeous trays full of cakes. And scones. And macarons. And mousse.

You know, this whole being-fed-amazing-food thing is quickly becoming my favourite part of blogging.

Before we left, they also gave us lovely gift bags – since Camilia itself is a medicinal product, they weren’t allowed to give us samples.

So, instead, the contents of the bag were cleverly themed around some of the herbal ingredients in Camilia – like rhubarb and chamomile. The teas were both delicious and I’m in love with the Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm. As far as I’m aware, teddy bear is NOT an ingredient, but cuddling with a new bear is a good distraction from teething pain.

Now, on to the product review.

First of all, I think I need to note that I’ve always been a bit of a skeptic when it comes to homeopathic remedies. That said, when we were in America earlier this year and Pumpkin was suffering with her front teeth coming in, I was willing to try pretty much anything and a homeopathic remedy ended up in my shopping basket.

I’m still not sure whether that treatment actually worked, if the sweet flavour just distracted from the pain or if maybe it was some sort of placebo effect. Whatever it was, the American homeopathic treatment seemed to help and when we got back to the UK, I was annoyed that I hadn’t stocked up.

So, when I got the invite for the Camilia event, I decided to go along and be open-minded about it. For one thing, I wanted to learn about the product. Also, I figured I’d get lots of good information about teething (which I definitely did).

Camilia is an oral solution that contains trace amounts of chamomile, rhubarb and poke root – all herbal remedies that are known for their soothing qualities.

The doses come in clever little disposable tubes – I think these are brilliant! When you have a grumpy baby in pain, the last thing you want to worry about is drawing up syringes of medication. This takes all the thought out of it.

Giving the medication is easy enough and, although she wasn’t too sure about it the first time around, Pumpkin quickly learned to open her mouth and tilt her head back when I offered a tube. I tried one and it didn’t really seem to have any flavour.

As far as whether or not it worked – well, the first time I gave it to her, she had been fighting sleep and crying on and off for a couple of hours. Within just a few minutes of giving a dose, she was asleep in my arms.

The next few times I used it, it was between doses of ibuprofen or paracetamol – when the pain started to come back, but it was too soon to give more of the mainstream medicines. Each time I gave the Camilia, I noticed a difference and I think it helped us get through until it was time to give the next dose of Calpol or Nurofen.

Am I convinced that Camilia helps with teething pain? Yes. Am I still a skeptic about homeopathy? Yes.

I can’t deny that I noticed a difference after giving the Camilia. Maybe it was the treatment. Maybe it was an indirect placebo effect. The thing is, I don’t really care WHY it helped. The important thing is that after giving the treatment, I think my baby felt better. And, to be honest, that’s enough for me!

Would I buy Camilia again? Yes. And I’d recommend it to anyone willing to give it a go, as well.

  1. Hi Shannon, I think there is a lot to be said for homeopathic medicine, but I’m like you I’m not a 100 on the fence. Nature is amazing and long ago that’s all people had to rely on for health remedies.

Saying that though, if a homeopathic remedy helps cut down on proper medicines, then that’s a good thing.

Hope Pumpkin is through the worst of her teething; it’s a testing time for parents!……The cakes look delicious too!

    • Thanks for your comment. I agree that natural remedies are great. A lot of modern medicine is based on natural remedies. But homeopathic treatments are different from natural remedies and it’s the differences that make me not-so-sure about them (I don’t think they’re *bad* I just don’t know that they actually do anything at all). At the same time, whatever works, right!? And yes, the cakes were amazing! 🙂
