Review: Munchkin fabric playpen

About a month ago, Pumpkin’s curiosity levels jumped into overdrive. Suddenly, her favourite things to play with were the radiator valve and the plugs by the television. These are also things that we can’t move or cover up.

Knowing that her rolling to chosen destinations would soon turn into crawling and then walking, we decided that it was time to get a playpen.

I’d read some reviews online from other bloggers (I wish I could remember who, so I could give them credit), and I’d heard good things about the Lindam playpens. We looked at the options available on Amazon, opted for the fabric mesh design and put in our order. It arrived a few days later.

At first, I was a bit worried that the Amazon seller had sent me the wrong thing since the playpen that arrived was Munchkin brand, rather than Lindam. A quick bit of Googling on my phone and I learned that they were the same company now.

That settled, I began to set up the playpen.

Putting it together was really easy – actually, the hardest part was just getting it out of the box – it was a tight fit and there was some serious suction building up inside!

Once I’d worked up a sweat liberating all the various pieces, the rest was fairly simple.

There are four main pieces – three sets of two panels and a cushioned floor pad. The panels snap together and then the pad gets tied in place.

Pumpkin examined the cushion and supervised me assembling the panels.

Then it was done – in less than ten minutes, Pumpkin was happily rolling around in her new playpen and I could pop to the kitchen or bathroom without worrying about what trouble she might be getting into.

Having used this playpen for a few weeks now, here are my thoughts:

Pros

  • Simple to set up
  • Looks great
  • Nice and secure with a gate that is easy to open, but childproof
  • Mesh panels are soft on baby’s head when she topples over against them
  • Pad can be easily cleaned
  • The individual panels can be used on their own across doorways or stairs and a fixing kit is included – meaning it can be re-purposed once your little one has outgrown the playpen.

Cons

  • Can’t be folded up easily – I wish the panels would fold together like a concertina. But they don’t.
  • Pad is not very soft – we have laminate floors and it didn’t do much to cushion Pumpkin’s falls. This wouldn’t be a problem on carpet, though, and we’ve just put the play mat underneath.
  • I’m not a fan of the bars on the gate panel. I would have preferred all the sides to be the fabric mesh.

Overall, I really like this playpen and Pumpkin is perfectly happy playing in it while I get things done around the house. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a way to contain a busy baby.

  2. Ohh great review – I’ve never seen a playpen like that before. At the moment we are just using a travel cot but when Jasmine is a bit bigger and er, more mobile – I might look at getting something like this. I never knew lindam and munchkin were the same company either!
