What are we reading? The Lorax

When I was growing up, I had a pretty big collection of Dr Seuss books. The brightly coloured illustrations and quirky verse really appealed to me as a child.

So, after Pumpkin was born, I knew I wanted to enjoy these books with her.

Especially The Lorax, since it’s my favourite of the good doctor’s stories.

In fact, The Lorax was the first book I read to Pumpkin. She was probably a month or two old when I pulled my copy off the shelf (a copy I’ve had for several years now) and introduced her to the offbeat world of Dr Seuss.

Lorax-01 These days, The Lorax is mainly for bedtime. Mostly because Pumpkin is pretty rough on the board books that she has at her disposal all day. For some reason, she really like standing on them.

But, she is getting better about how she handles books, so I’ll let her flip through paper pages as long as she’s fully supervised and being gentle.

One of the other reasons I really like The Lorax as a bedtime story is that I have a good portion of it memorised. So, when Pumpkin starts squirming around, I can keep going without having to see the words.

I’m sure that before long, I’ll have plenty more children’s books memorised.

The Lorax tells the story of the Onceler, who shows up in the idyllic land of Truffula Trees.

Lorax-08 He thinks the Truffula Trees, with their fluffy tops are fab. So, he chops one down and uses it to knit a thneed.

What’s a thneed you ask? Well, it serves a variety of purposes and it’s something that everyone needs.Lorax-05The thneed proves popular, so he starts making more. Soon, he’s chopping down Truffula Trees left and right and he’s built a big factory that’s probably breaking all of the environmental protection laws.

The Lorax is a bit of an environmentalist. He “speaks for the trees” and tries to get the Onceler to stop his bad behaviour and clean up the mess he’s making.

So, yes, The Lorax is also a story about conservation. Another bonus from my perspective, and a topic that’s probably even more important today than it was when the book was first published in 1971.

What do you think? Have you read The Lorax? What’s your family’s favourite Dr Seuss book? I’d love to hear about it in the comments section below.

The Lorax is by Dr Seuss (also known as Theodor Geisel). It is published by Harper Collins (My copy probably looks different, as it’s a US copy).
