Eight months old!

Eight months old!

I know I keep saying how quickly the time has gone, but this time I really mean it. Honestly, it feels like month six was just around the corner, and I think I missed month seven entirely.

eight-months-1

The fact that I only have a little more than a month left of maternity leave is a little mind-blowing and a lot depressing. At least I’ll be working from home, so I won’t miss any of the special moments with her, but I don’t know how I’m going to juggle it all. Oh well. That’s a problem for Future Shannon to worry about.

Pumpkin is really starting to develop her own little personality. She has become very talkative – she makes a loud staccato “Ah” sound, as well as various gurgles and grunts and I’ve even noticed her ‘talking’ to other babies on the bus and in her Sing and Sign class.

eight-months-3

She’s always happy when she wakes up and greets me with a smile every morning.

There are also the giggles, which melt my heart. While she used to only laugh when we played Super Baby or blew on her belly, now funny faces, things on TV and tickling all set her off too.

We read books, watch television, sing songs, practice our signing, go for walks and swim. When I put her in her play pen, she’ll normally keep herself occupied for a while before demanding to be taken out.

Her curiosity is definitely on the rise – she inspects everything very carefully these days and she loves to watch people. She loves sitting in her pram and smiles at everyone she sees, but she prefers to get out of it and have a proper look around.

eight-months-6

She’s so close to crawling now – it will be any day that she finishes figuring it out. She easily gets up on all fours and can even pick up an arm or leg as if to take a ‘step’, but she doesn’t get any further than that.

eight-months-4

However, she can get around pretty well now with a combination of rolling and the inchworm shuffle. She can also go backwards, but isn’t able to control that so much.

Sitting on her own is a skill she has mastered, but she hasn’t quite figured out how to sit up from lying down. Again, she has gotten so close on several occasions. I’m sure by the next update, she’ll have it sussed.

Sleeping through the night was something that I was really getting used to again. Unfortunately, that seems to not be an option right now, as she wakes at least once per night for an additional feed. Hopefully it’s a growing spurt and not a developing habit!

We’re up to five teeth now. All four fronts are in, as well as one canine. The bottom two and the top right canine all came in at the same time at about seven months – the other two have made their appearance over the last week or so.

eight-months-7

The first few teeth were quite painful and we went through a good bit of medication. The most recent ones have been easier though. The dummy or a teething ring usually help. She also likes to gnaw on cold carrots.

Weaning is the only thing that seems like it’s going slowly. Pumpkin seems much more interested in playing with her food – and her Bumbo tray – than actually eating anything.

eight-months-2

There are a few things she’ll munch on with enthusiasm, though, like yoghurt and bananas, but most everything else, she’ll just gnaw on for a while or throw on the floor. Then, when I offer her a bottle, she’ll guzzle it. She’s doing okay weight-wise though, and finally doubled her birth weight when we saw the health visitor last week.

eight-months-5
While I love to watch her change and grow, snuggle time is still my favourite. She still falls asleep in my arms regularly and is often quite content to just sit on a lap and play with a soft toy or gurgle to herself.

How old is your little one? How are they getting along? Are as surprised as I am about how quickly the time is going by? Tell me about it in the comments below.
