This week, we’ve been reading The Fairytale Hairdresser and the Little Mermaid.
The sixth in the Fairytale Hairdresser series, this book tells the story of Kitty Lacey, the finest hairdresser in all of Fairytale Land.
But she does more than expertly style the locks of all our favourite characters – she’s also a problem solver, a bit of a therapist and a great friend.
I have to admit, when I first saw this book, I was a bit dubious. It seemed a little too gender-stereotypey for my liking. But once I read it, I quickly changed my mind.
Author Abie Longstaff has put a modern twist on the fairytale. The female characters are pragmatic and independent, and the little mermaid, Coral, learns a valuable lesson: that you shouldn’t change yourself just to get people to like you.
While the story is great – and certainly exceeded my expectations – it’s the illustrations by Lauren Beard that really won me over.
They’re colourful, lovely to look at and extremely detailed – I loved Coral’s pet sea-cat.
Plus, it’s fun to flip through the pages and spot fairytale characters interacting. For example, the Big Bad Wolf wearing Grandma’s dress, driving a speedboat and pulling Red Riding Hood on waterskis.

We’re definitely enjoying this book. I like reading it to Pumpkin now, and when she’s a bit older, I think we’ll probably spend plenty of time looking at the pictures in more detail (but right now, she just wants to turn the pages as quickly as possible). 🙂
